Track the food in your kitchen to prevent wasting food

Food Waste

01 / Overview

For my final year project at Newcastle University, I developed an Android app to help households reduce food waste. The app served as a digital kitchen inventory, allowing users to track items and their expiry dates to save money and prevent good food from being thrown away.

By connecting to an external recipe API, the app could suggest meals based on ingredients that were close to expiring, turning a potential problem into a practical solution.

  • As the sole developer, I designed and built the entire native Android application from scratch using Java in Android Studio, handling everything from the UI to local data persistence.

  • I implemented an inventory management system that alerted users when items were nearing their 'best before' date, prompting them to use the food in time.

  • To make the app more useful, I integrated a third-party recipe API. The app would query this API with the user's available ingredients to suggest relevant recipes, directly helping them use up food they already had.

  • The project earned a 75% grade and included plans for future enhancements, such as a barcode scanner for faster item entry to improve the inventory management workflow.

02 / Problem

Households throw away good food because they lose track of what's in the kitchen and when it expires.

03 / Decisions

I connected the app to a recipe API, so items close to their expiry date turn into meal suggestions.

04 / Outcome

The native Android app tracks the kitchen inventory, sends best-before alerts and suggests recipes. It earned a 75% grade, with a barcode scanner planned for faster item entry.
