Alnwick Castle
Castle and country house in Alnwick, Northumberland

01 / Overview
I was a developer on the team that built the new digital home for Alnwick Castle, one of Britain's most iconic historical sites. We aimed to modernize the visitor experience by creating a single platform where people could discover events, book tickets, and browse the online gift shop. The new site replaced an outdated system, providing a stable and engaging experience for hundreds of thousands of annual visitors.
I built out the backend services using C# and .NET, focusing on the systems for managing event bookings and e-commerce transactions. All site data, from user accounts to shop inventory, was structured and stored in a SQL Server database.
A key contribution was my work on the custom Content Management System (CMS). I developed features that gave the castle's staff direct control over content, allowing them to add new events or update exhibitions without developer assistance.
On the frontend, I worked with JavaScript and Sass to translate the Figma designs into a library of responsive components, ensuring the site provided a polished and intuitive experience across all devices.
