Microsoft Word Add-on

01 / Overview

Role: Sole architect and developer - built end-to-end from scratch

Designed and built a Microsoft Word task pane add-in from scratch, letting analysts capture structured notes and apply organization-defined templates directly from within a Word document, without breaking their workflow to switch to the main web platform. The add-in runs inside Word's task pane (via the Office JS API) and talks to the same backend REST API as the web platform, using a generated OpenAPI client and Firebase authentication (including multi-factor auth) shared with the main product. Built out core flows - sign-in and tenant switching, fetching and applying note templates (including structured/table-based template answers), and writing captured content back into the document - plus production concerns like token refresh handling, error messaging, and Datadog observability wired through a dev proxy.

  • Sole author of the entire add-in, from the initial Office Add-in scaffold to a maintained production tool

  • Full auth integration reusing the platform's Firebase setup, including MFA support

  • Structured template system: fetches org-defined note/answer templates (including table-based ones) and applies them against the live document via the Office JS API

  • Production-grade observability (Datadog) and reliability work (token refresh, error handling) for a tool running inside Word's WebView rather than a normal browser

02 / Problem

Analysts wrote their notes in Word, but capturing structured notes and applying organisation templates meant switching out to the main web platform and breaking their workflow.

03 / Decisions

The add-in talks to the same backend REST API as the web platform through a generated OpenAPI client, and reuses the platform's Firebase auth, MFA included. That meant there was no separate backend to build or maintain.

04 / Outcome

I built it solo, from the first scaffold to a maintained production tool. It handles sign-in and tenant switching, applies structured and table-based templates to the live document, and reports to Datadog from inside Word's WebView.
